TCM information database that is built by SIRC/TCM and developed on the basis of National Key Projects of the “10th Five-Year Plan” is a large-scale comprehensive information platform integrating TCM, bio-pharmacy, information technology and chemistry. Five independent as well as inter-related TCM information databases are set up in terms of the interaction of diseases, formulae, Chinese medicine, TCM compounds and compound activity. It is reputed at home and abroad for its novel design, powerful data and unique function.

The database collects the data of diseases described in Chinese and western medicine, formulae scattered in articles, TCM data, compounds and compound activity contained in TCM, i.e. 1,400 kinds of diseases, over 180,000 formulae, about 9,000 kinds of Chinese herbs, 30,000 kinds of TCM compounds containing dimensional and three-dimensional structures and 80,000 compounds activity, covering various kinds of information involving text, graph, image and chemical structure. The two features of the data are as follows: one is the collection of clinical formulae published in TCM magazines since the foundation of People’s Republic of China; the other is the collection of data of TCM compounds and compound activity. The connective relation of the five databases has provided a mighty knowledge basis for the new drug innovative research system knowing-what, knowing-why and knowing-how and a pre-selection instrument for further development of new drug research. Analysis of the relationship among formulae, TCM curative effects and TCM compound bioactivity based on data mining can be used as the revelatory fundamental data for drug research, which promotes the successful development of new drugs. Structural data analysis, network database structure, multi-discipline coverage and free-design facing specific demands make the database valuable.

    Under the support of Department of International Cooperation of Ministry of Science and Technology, the previous TCM database of SIRC/TCM has been creatively developed into one with a English searching platform on the basis of former structure and data and won highly appreciation and recognition of experts in the field.

As the main TCM database of Shanghai Public Service Platform and as the foundation of Pudong New Area Biomedicine Information Public Service Platform, it has contributed many kinds of unique services to domestic and foreign enterprises. Large joint ventures in overseas pharmacy, healthcare drug and cosmetics are very satisfied with the comprehensive data analysis of diseases, formulae, TCM, TCM compound pharmacological activity from the database. Moreover, based on the data mining and formula design, Geng-shu An Granule (patent number: 200510074259.1), a TCM new drug that can cure female climacteric syndrome by substituting hormone substitution treatment, has been successfully developed and submitted to the clinical trial. The pre-clinical experiments show that Geng-shu An Granule is a novel drug with safety, significant curative effect, and accurate mechanism; hence it is of promising market future.
